Desktop wallpaper size on Mac: Retina pixels and sharp exports
The size shown in Display settings is often a scaled working resolution, not the physical pixel grid of the panel. Wallpaper files should usually target the physical dimensions so type and logos stay crisp.
Logical size is not always image size
macOS scales interface elements so they remain readable on high-density screens. Apps may see a logical width of roughly half the panel’s physical width. A browser can convert between the two using the display’s device pixel ratio.

Common native wallpaper dimensions
Recent 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro panels commonly use 3024×1964 and 3456×2234 pixels. Apple Studio Display is 5120×2880. A 4K monitor is usually 3840×2160, while a common ultrawide format is 3440×1440.
Models and scaled modes vary, so treat presets as shortcuts rather than proof. Check System Information or the display manufacturer’s specification when exact dimensions matter.

Allow for crop and interface furniture
The menu bar, Dock and Fill Screen crop can cover the outer parts of an image. Keep important text away from all four edges. If the same design will be used on displays with different aspect ratios, export each size rather than stretching one master file.
