Decide what the wallpaper should organise
There are two common jobs. A file organiser divides the visible desktop into areas such as Inbox, Working and Archive. A project wallpaper identifies the Space itself. Mixing both can work, but only if you regularly keep files on the desktop and the zones remain visible.
For builders and client work, project identity is usually stronger. Use the project name as the largest element, one action line beneath it and a colour you do not use for the neighbouring Space.
Design around windows, the Dock and Mission Control
The centre of the screen is where windows collect. Keep the background recognisable through colour and simple geometry instead of relying on a detailed illustration. Place any secondary information well inside the edge so Fill Screen cropping cannot cut it off.
Open Mission Control while testing. If you cannot distinguish the wallpaper at thumbnail size, simplify it: shorten the name, increase contrast or remove a motif.

Choose a small set of directions instead of designing every wallpaper from scratch. Business projects can use calm colour, a restrained typeface and a narrow band. Personal work can use a brighter palette. Deep-work Spaces can remove almost everything except the name.
Keep the placement consistent. The colour tells you which Space you entered; the stable layout lets you read the project name without searching for it.
Export at the right size
A MacBook and an external monitor often have different pixel densities and aspect ratios. Export each composition at the display’s physical width and height rather than stretching one file across both.
